Negligent Trailer Driver’s Reckless Speeding Leaves LASTMA Officer Critically Injured
Lagos, Nigeria – A reckless trailer driver lost control at high speed, severely injuring an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a devastating accident at Ojodu Berger, Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred while the officer was on his way to resume duty, highlighting the dangers of negligent driving on Lagos roads.
According to preliminary investigations, the fully loaded trailer, registered as KTG 33 ZZ (Bauchi State), was traveling from Agidingbi via Oba Ogunji Road towards Omole Junction when the driver, moving at an excessive speed, lost control. The resulting crash inflicted severe injuries on the LASTMA officer, fracturing his right leg and hand.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to the Surgical Emergency Centre at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where doctors determined that the extent of his injuries required an immediate amputation of his right leg.
In a bid to escape justice, the driver fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended by security personnel from Ojodu Police Station, assisted by LASTMA officials.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki visited the injured officer at LASUTH, condemning the driver’s recklessness. He stressed that such tragedies are preventable if road users obey traffic regulations and prioritize safety.
“LASTMA officers are not enemies of motorists. They are committed to ensuring free-flowing traffic, which contributes to economic growth and urban efficiency in Lagos State,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He expressed deep sympathy for the injured officer and reaffirmed LASTMA’s dedication to promoting road safety and maintaining order on Lagos roads.
