Nigeria Marks International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation,First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Stronger Action

As the world commemorates the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) today, February 6, stakeholders in Nigeria have renewed their commitment to eradicating the harmful practice.

With this year’s theme, “Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM,” the call for action is louder than ever. First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the urgency of intensified efforts to protect the rights and dignity of women and girls.

In a statement, Senator Tinubu highlighted that FGM is a human rights violation with no health benefits, yet Nigeria bears the highest absolute number of affected individuals globally. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), over 20 million Nigerian women and girls have undergone FGM, with another 14 million at risk by 2030 if urgent measures are not taken.

While Nigeria has made significant progress in combating FGM through government initiatives, the UNFPA/UNICEF Joint Programme, and the support of civil society, traditional institutions, and community leaders, the battle is far from over.

“Violence against women is not just a women’s issue; it is a challenge against humanity. It affects us all and undermines our shared values of respect and dignity. Every person, regardless of gender, deserves to live free from fear, discrimination, and violation,” the First Lady stated.

She reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to eradicating FGM, pledging continued advocacy and support. The First Lady called for stronger partnerships, increased investments, and more involvement from youth and women in leading the fight against FGM.

As Nigeria joins the global community in marking this significant day, stakeholders are urged to strengthen alliances, empower survivors, and intensify grassroots campaigns to end the practice once and for all.

With collective action and sustained commitment, a Nigeria free from Female Genital Mutilation is within reach.
