LASTMA Cracks Down on Route Violations and Illegal Parking by Commercial Bus Operators in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to commercial bus drivers, particularly operators of mini buses, popularly known as ‘Korope,’ over unauthorized route deviations and illegal parking on public roads.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, emphasized that the directive aligns with the government’s broader initiative to improve orderliness on Lagos roads and facilitate seamless traffic flow across the city.

Hon. Giwa made it clear that all ‘Korope’ drivers must immediately desist from using unauthorized routes, warning that violators will face strict legal penalties. He added that LASTMA operatives have been directed to intensify enforcement efforts against reckless driving and other unlawful activities that disrupt traffic and hinder urban mobility.

In addition to route violations, Hon. Giwa condemned the indiscriminate parking and loading of passengers on public roads, a practice he said contributes significantly to traffic congestion and endangers other road users. He mandated that commercial bus operators must henceforth limit their activities to designated bus stops and terminals to prevent further disruption.

“Illegal parking and reckless route violations have become a serious challenge in Lagos due to the indiscriminate actions of mini bus drivers,” Hon. Giwa stated. “Such infractions obstruct free traffic flow and pose a threat to public safety. LASTMA has been instructed to enforce full compliance with traffic laws and apprehend offenders.”

He also highlighted the security risks associated with unauthorized route deviations, noting that strict adherence to designated routes would help prevent criminal activities linked to commercial vehicles, particularly ‘Korope.’

LASTMA has urged all road users, especially commercial transport operators, to comply with the new directives and support efforts to promote responsible driving. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a well-structured, safe, and efficient transportation system in Lagos.
