Ondo Police Debunk Report Linking First Lady’s Convoy to Tragic Accident in Akure

Akure, Ondo State – April 17, 2025 —
The Ondo State Police Command has refuted claims by Sahara Reporters alleging that the convoy of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was responsible for the death of a young girl in Akure earlier today.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the command described the report as false, misleading, and entirely baseless.

According to the police, preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts confirm that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver in an unregistered white Lexus vehicle, and not by any vehicle associated with the First Lady’s entourage.

“The accident occurred in the Oba Ile area of Akure. A witness immediately pursued the fleeing driver on a motorcycle after the incident,” the statement read. “These accounts have been verified by multiple eyewitnesses, including the parents of the deceased.”

The police further clarified that the victim was 7 years old, contrary to Sahara Reporters’ claim that she was 9, calling it another example of the publication’s lack of factual accuracy.

The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State, personally visited the bereaved family and assured them of a full and transparent investigation. “At no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in this unfortunate event,” the statement emphasized.

In a related development, the command also debunked another claim by Sahara Reporters about a kidnapping incident it alleged took place in Ondo State. Police investigations confirmed that the incident actually occurred in Ugbogui, near Ohosu, a community in Edo State.

Describing the actions of the media outlet as “unprofessional and harmful,” the police urged Sahara Reporters to retract the false reports and issue a public apology to the affected individuals and communities.

“These misleading narratives cause undue fear and confusion and do a disservice to national unity,” the command stated.

The Ondo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to truth, public safety, and justice, while calling on members of the public to come forward with any useful information that could aid in apprehending the hit-and-run driver.
