Reckless Driving: LASTMA Hands Over Three Trucks Involved in Apapa Collision to Police

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a serious traffic incident involving three articulated trucks at the Flour Mills corridor inward Airways, Apapa, stemming from reckless and illegal driving behaviour.

According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred when an empty flatbed truck, in clear violation of traffic regulations, drove against the authorized direction of traffic (one-way) and collided head-on with two oncoming container-laden Mark trucks. While no casualties were recorded, the crash significantly disrupted traffic flow in the area.

In a further breach of regulations, all three trucks involved were found to be without visible registration plates, raising concerns over vehicle identification and safety compliance.

LASTMA officials responded promptly to the scene, managing traffic and ensuring safety before transferring the vehicles to the Traffic Division of Area ‘B’ Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Apapa for further investigation and necessary legal action.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly condemned the reckless conduct of the truck driver responsible for the accident, describing it as a grave threat to public safety. He issued a stern warning to all motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to desist from driving against traffic—a serious offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized that vehicles caught violating this law will not only be impounded but will also face full prosecution in accordance with the law.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to restoring order on Lagos roads through strict enforcement, continuous public sensitisation, and collaboration with key transport stakeholders.
