Tragedy in Iyana Ejigbo: Overspeeding Bus Kills Pedestrian, Injures Two Others as Driver, Conductor Flee Scene
A tragic accident rocked the Iyana Ejigbo area of Lagos on Saturday as a commercial bus, reportedly traveling at high speed, lost control and fatally struck a pedestrian while leaving two others seriously injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, identifying the vehicle involved as a painted LT commercial bus with registration number AAA 927 YJ. According to preliminary investigations, the bus suffered a brake failure, causing the driver to veer off the road and crash into pedestrians.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver and conductor of the ill-fated bus immediately fled the scene after the crash, abandoning both the victims and the vehicle.
LASTMA operatives quickly arrived at the scene and rescued the injured, while recovering the body of the deceased who was pinned under the bus. All three victims were rushed to the Isolo General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Officers from the Ejigbo Police Division provided security during the rescue operation. The bus has since been handed over to the police for a full investigation.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Mr. Bakare-Oki also used the opportunity to remind motorists of the importance of adhering to speed limits and ensuring regular maintenance of their vehicles—especially their braking systems—to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
“Drivers must take responsibility for their vehicles and understand the grave consequences of negligence,” he said. “We remain committed to promoting safety and swift emergency response on Lagos roads.”
