Pedestrian Killed in Ojota: LASTMA Urges Use of Pedestrian Bridges

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong warning to pedestrians following a tragic incident at Ojota, where a man lost his life after being hit by a lorry while attempting to cross the expressway illegally.

According to LASTMA, the fatal accident occurred over the weekend as the pedestrian tried to dash across the busy Ojota main carriageway, ignoring the nearby pedestrian bridge. The lorry, in motion at the time, struck the individual. In a bid to flee the scene, the driver lost control and rammed into a Toyota Corolla with registration number LND 905 HN.

LASTMA officials at the scene responded swiftly, apprehending the driver and securing the vehicle. Both were handed over to officers at the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation.

The remains of the deceased were later transferred to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) by LASTMA operatives in accordance with official procedures.

Speaking on the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, describing the tragedy as avoidable. He stressed the importance of using pedestrian bridges and adhering to road safety regulations.

“This incident underscores the serious risks of crossing expressways at unauthorized points,” Mr. Bakare-Oki said. “Ignoring the use of pedestrian bridges is not only dangerous but also illegal.”

He highlighted the state government’s continued investment in pedestrian infrastructure and urged the public to make responsible use of these facilities. “Safety on our roads is a shared responsibility. Everyone must play their part to avoid needless tragedies like this.”
