 TPG Urges Adherence to INEC Timelines, Warns Against Attempts to Disrupt 2027 Electoral Process

LAGOS, August 4, 2026 – The Progressives Group (TPG), a coalition of Nigerians advocating democratic governance and national stability, has cautioned against any actions capable of disrupting Nigeria's ongoing electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Secretary, Comrade 'Shola Omolola, the group expressed concern over recent comments and declarations surrounding the electoral process, while acknowledging the "Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition" released by the G100, a coalition of prominent leaders and academics.

TPG stated that while opposition and dissent remain essential elements of a democratic society, the country's electoral process must be protected from actions capable of truncating, derailing or intimidating it.

The group noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already commenced preparations for the 2027 General Elections in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

According to the coalition, INEC should be allowed to discharge its constitutional responsibilities without interference, warning that any attempt to delay, truncate or delegitimize the electoral process would undermine Nigeria's democracy.

TPG also called for a level playing field for all eligible Nigerians seeking elective offices, insisting that aspirants should be allowed to participate freely without intimidation, harassment or undue pressure.

The coalition further urged political parties, civil society organisations and opinion leaders to embrace issue-based campaigns and constructive engagement instead of actions capable of creating tension or uncertainty around the electoral timetable.

It stressed that democracy can only flourish when all stakeholders—including government, opposition groups, civil society and citizens—respect established democratic rules and institutions.

The group called on the G100, political parties and other stakeholders to focus on strengthening democratic institutions rather than weakening them.

"Nigeria's democracy is bigger than any group or individual. Let INEC do its job. Let the people decide in 2027," the statement concluded.
