Lagos Deploys Drone Surveillance Technology to Strengthen Security, Deter Criminal Activities – LSSTF
LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Lagos State Government has intensified the deployment of drone surveillance technology across strategic locations in the state as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering, enhance crime prevention, and improve rapid response capabilities in Africa’s most populous city.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) in collaboration with security agencies, is aimed at creating a smarter and more proactive security architecture capable of addressing emerging security threats while boosting investor confidence and economic growth.
Speaking on the programme, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of LSSTF, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, said Lagos has significantly expanded its security monitoring capabilities by deploying sophisticated aerial surveillance assets capable of observing activities across large parts of the state.
“We now have eyes in the skies with drone technology,” Ogunsan said. “Our drones are watching all over Lagos day and night to monitor activities. Criminals and criminally minded persons should be warned to stay away.”
According to him, the deployment of drones is not only intended to deter criminal activities but also to reassure residents, businesses, and investors that Lagos remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment.
“This is also to assure all law-abiding Lagosians that we are ahead of the game in terms of safety and security,” he added.
The development comes as security agencies across Nigeria continue to adopt technology-driven approaches to tackle emerging threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, vandalism, cult-related violence, and other criminal activities.
Recent operational reports from the Lagos State Police Command underscore the growing importance of intelligence-led policing. Within the last month, the command recorded significant breakthroughs leading to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, stolen property, illicit substances, and military camouflage uniforms, while several suspects linked to armed robbery, cultism, vandalism, and impersonation were arrested across the state.
Security experts have increasingly identified drone technology as a critical tool for modern law enforcement, particularly in densely populated urban centres such as Lagos. The technology enables security agencies to monitor difficult terrains, identify suspicious movements, track criminal activities, and coordinate responses more effectively.
For a megacity with an estimated population exceeding 20 million residents and a vast network of highways, waterways, industrial hubs, and residential communities, aerial surveillance has become an important component of public safety operations.
Ogunsan attributed the success of the initiative to the commitment of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as a strong advocate of security investment and public safety.
“I want to thank the Executive Governor who has made security and safety his priority, our dear Governor of Lagos State, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. He is the number one champion of safety and security in Lagos,” he said.
He noted that the state's investments in security complement broader national efforts aimed at strengthening internal security and protecting citizens across the country.
“This is our own effort as a sub-national government to ensure safety and security for Nigeria as championed by our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” Ogunsan stated. “We are not going to allow criminals run us over in this country.”
Highlighting the effectiveness of the drone programme, the LSSTF chief revealed that aerial surveillance recently played a key role in monitoring suspicious activities around Pan-Atlantic University following the circulation of a viral video showing two masked individuals emerging from a forested area near the institution.
“To give you a specific example, the recent viral video depicting two masked individuals emerging from a forest area adjoining Pan-Atlantic University was followed up with drone surveillance facilitated by LSSTF as a proactive step to support police operations within the axis,” he said.
The incident, he noted, demonstrated the practical value of drone technology in intelligence gathering, threat assessment, and early intervention.
Ogunsan also issued a warning to individuals planning to engage in criminal activities within the state, stressing that security agencies are increasingly leveraging advanced technology to monitor and neutralise threats.
“Anybody who wants to foment trouble in Lagos should know that we are watching. Our drones are hovering around day and night, and we are closely monitoring any suspicious activities,” he said.
He added that the surveillance network covers communities across both the mainland and island parts of the state.
Beyond drone operations, Lagos continues to implement a multi-layered security strategy that combines aerial patrols, intelligence gathering, community engagement, and conventional law enforcement activities.
“To add to this, our aerial surveillance patrols are still continuing. We have boots on the ground, and we have eyes in the skies,” Ogunsan stated.
As Lagos continues to grow economically and demographically, authorities say the adoption of technology-driven security solutions will remain critical to protecting critical infrastructure, businesses, educational institutions, and residential communities.
The state government maintains that the integration of drone technology into security operations reflects its determination to stay ahead of evolving threats and sustain the safety, stability, and prosperity required to support Nigeria’s economic future.
“Lagos is safe and will continue to be so,” Ogunsan affirmed.
