Mushin Explosion Caused by Mechanical Failure, Not Terrorism or IED Attack — Police

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that the explosion that occurred on June 22, 2026, at No. 19 Way Street, Mushin, Lagos, was caused by a mechanical failure and not by terrorism, sabotage, or an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The clarification was made on Thursday by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, who spoke on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, following an extensive forensic and technical investigation by the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit.

According to the police, initial reports from the scene raised concerns that the explosion might have been caused by an explosive device, prompting the deployment of EOD-CBRN specialists to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

CP Tijani disclosed that investigators carried out a detailed examination of the affected vehicle, analyzed recovered fragments and damage patterns, collected and evaluated physical evidence, and interviewed relevant witnesses.

"The investigation established that the incident was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives," the commissioner said.

He explained that forensic findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast characteristics commonly associated with explosive attacks.

The police also noted that the damaged vehicle did not display the structural deformation, fragmentation patterns, crater effects, or displacement typically observed in explosions involving explosives.

According to the findings, the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component located outside the vehicle. The failure triggered a sudden release of energy that shattered the front passenger-side glass panels and caused minor injuries to the vehicle's occupant.

Based on the outcome of the investigation, the police officially reclassified the incident from a suspected IED attack to a mechanical explosion.

"Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion and has been officially reclassified from a suspected IED incident," CP Tijani stated.

The Lagos State Police Command reassured residents that there is no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage, or any threat to public safety.

The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities to security agencies, assuring Lagosians that all security-related incidents would continue to be subjected to thorough professional investigation before conclusions are reached.

The police further emphasized that there is no cause for alarm, stressing that public safety and security remain a top priority for law enforcement agencies in the state.
