NDLEA MMIA Command Holds Anti-Drug Walk to Mark UN Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

LAGOS — The Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Strategic Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) today organized a road walk in Lagos to commemorate the 2026 United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to combating drug abuse and promoting a drug-free society.

The awareness walk, which commenced at about 7:30 a.m. from the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Complex, the headquarters of the command, attracted personnel from various security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service.

Participants marched through major routes within the airport environment, from the Pilgrims Gate to the 7/8 Bridge and back to the starting point, engaging members of the public and sensitizing communities on the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The exercise drew enthusiastic responses from residents, workers, and commuters along the route, many of whom applauded the sustained efforts of the NDLEA under the leadership of its Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Muhammad Buba Marwa (Rtd), CON, OFR, in addressing drug-related crimes and promoting public awareness.

During intermittent stops along the route, NDLEA officials interacted with groups and community members, emphasizing the need for collective action in the fight against substance abuse and drug trafficking.

Speaking at the conclusion of the walk, the Commander of the MMIA Strategic Command, Ahmad Muhammad Tukur, expressed appreciation to all participating agencies and stakeholders for their support and commitment to the anti-drug campaign.

He urged participants to extend the message of drug prevention beyond the event by educating their families, friends, and communities on the dangers associated with illicit drug use.

Tukur highlighted the significance of this year’s global theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” noting that it underscores the evolving nature of drug-related threats and the need for innovative strategies to address them.

According to him, while the NDLEA remains committed to the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of drug offenders, the agency also places significant emphasis on preventive measures through public education, sensitization, and advocacy.

He stressed that creating awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse remains a critical component of the agency’s mandate, adding that sustained community engagement is essential to reducing drug demand and safeguarding public health and security.

The United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 to strengthen global action and cooperation towards achieving a world free of drug abuse and trafficking.
