Dangote Cement Strengthens Sustainability Drive with 1,500 New CNG Trucks, Improved Climate Rating

Dangote Cement Plc has reinforced its commitment to sustainable growth across Africa by expanding its green logistics programme with the acquisition of 1,500 additional compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, while earning an upgraded climate and water management rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Dangote Cement Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable business practices, environmental stewardship and responsible growth as it continues to embed sustainability across its operations in Africa.

The cement manufacturer said its sustainability strategy is focused on reducing environmental impact, improving energy efficiency, promoting diversity and inclusion, supporting host communities and creating long-term value for stakeholders across its 10 African markets.

As part of its decarbonisation and green logistics agenda, the company announced the acquisition of an additional 1,500 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks. According to the company, the initiative is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving operational efficiency and lowering dependence on conventional diesel-powered transportation.

Dangote Cement also disclosed that it has earned an upgraded "B" rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its climate and water management performance, a development it said reflects increasing international recognition of its environmental sustainability efforts.

The company noted that energy optimisation remains a critical component of its sustainability agenda, with a favourable energy mix helping to reduce production costs while lowering its carbon footprint across operations.

Speaking on the company's sustainability vision, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement Plc, Arvind Pathak, said sustainability is integrated into every aspect of the company's business.

“At Dangote Cement, sustainability is not a standalone initiative; it is embedded in the way we operate, invest and grow. As we expand our footprint across Africa, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact through cleaner energy sources, improved operational efficiency and innovative logistics solutions such as our growing CNG-powered fleet. Our goal is to create lasting value for shareholders while supporting the transition to a more sustainable and resilient future for Africa,” he said.

Pathak added that while cement remains essential to Africa's infrastructure and economic development, the company is equally committed to ensuring production processes minimise emissions, conserve resources, protect the environment and deliver lasting benefits to host communities.

He stressed that sustainability remains central to Dangote Cement's long-term growth strategy and value creation.

Beyond environmental initiatives, the company said it continues to strengthen corporate governance and social responsibility. Its Board currently has 28 per cent female representation and comprises directors from seven different nationalities, underscoring its commitment to diversity, inclusion and global best practices.

Dangote Cement also stated that its sustainability initiatives are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of responsible industrialisation, climate action, economic growth and community development.

According to the company, its sustainability performance complements a resilient business model that continues to create shared value for investors, employees, customers, host communities and governments across Africa.

Among the company's key sustainability milestones are the upgrade of its CDP climate and water management rating to B, the acquisition of 1,500 additional CNG trucks to support low-carbon transportation, continued investment in energy efficiency initiatives, 28 per cent female representation on its Board, directors from seven nationalities, and continued alignment of its sustainability programmes with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
