IHS Nigeria Donates Business Equipment to Empower Persons with Disabilities in Abuja Community

Leading communications infrastructure company, IHS Nigeria, has donated business-support equipment to persons with disabilities in the Karonmajiji community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as part of its efforts to promote inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods through its Project Empower initiative.

The donation, presented during a ceremony held in the community on Monday, July 27, forms part of IHS Nigeria's corporate social responsibility programme aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship among underserved groups by providing practical tools to support and expand existing businesses.

The initiative followed a community needs assessment, with the company opting to provide productive assets rather than cash grants in order to encourage long-term business sustainability, accountability and economic resilience.

Speaking during the presentation, Director of Sustainability at IHS Nigeria, Titilope Oguntuga, said the initiative reflects the company's commitment to fostering inclusive development by equipping persons with disabilities with the resources needed to build sustainable livelihoods.

She explained that IHS Nigeria donated 50 pieces of business-support equipment, including sewing machines, freezers, generators and hairdressing kits, to carefully selected beneficiaries across the community.

According to Oguntuga, the intervention is intended to promote entrepreneurship, enhance self-reliance and improve household incomes while contributing to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

In his remarks, the Chief of the Karonmajiji Disabled Community, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammed Katsina, who was represented by the community's Secretary, Alhaji Mohammed Dantani, commended IHS Nigeria for its commitment to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities through practical and sustainable interventions.

He described the donation as a clear demonstration of the company's partnership with the community, noting that the business equipment would significantly improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries while creating greater economic opportunities for them and their families.

The event attracted traditional rulers, government representatives, leaders and members of the Karonmajiji Disabled Community Association, as well as implementing partners, including the Field of Skills and Dreams Vocational Technical and Entrepreneurship (FSD VTE) Training Institute, alongside other community stakeholders.

Participants reaffirmed their collective commitment to advancing inclusion, promoting economic empowerment and supporting sustainable community development.

Project Empower is one of IHS Nigeria's flagship social investment initiatives, designed to strengthen community resilience through strategic partnerships that expand economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for underserved populations.
