 Delta Police Bust Suspected Drug Cartel in Owa-Abbi, Recover 21 Bags of Indian Hemp

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 56-year-old man, Lucky Oyiboka, and recovered 21 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp during an intelligence-led raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Owa-Abbi, Ukwani Local Government Area of the state.

The operation, carried out on Saturday, August 8, 2026, was conducted by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) following credible and actionable intelligence.

According to the Command, the raid forms part of ongoing efforts in line with the crime-fighting initiative of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at tackling violent crime and the proliferation of illicit drugs across the country.

During the operation, the operatives arrested Oyiboka and conducted a thorough search of the premises, where they discovered and recovered 21 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

Preliminary investigations, according to the police, indicated that the suspect was allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit drugs.

The Command said investigations had been intensified to establish the extent of the suspected drug network and identify other individuals who may be connected to the operation.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and curbing the spread of illicit drugs across the state.

The Commissioner also urged members of the public to continue providing the police with credible and timely information that could assist in preventing and solving crimes.

He assured residents that the identities of informants would be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
