Interswitch, Temenos Strengthen Partnership with CBN to Drive Digital Banking Transformation in Nigeria
Interswitch Group and global banking software provider Temenos have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nigeria's digital banking transformation agenda following a high-level courtesy visit to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where both organisations explored opportunities to modernise banking infrastructure, strengthen financial crime prevention, and advance Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) innovation.
Interswitch Group, Africa's leading integrated digital payments and commerce company, alongside global banking software provider Temenos, recently paid a joint courtesy visit to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration on the modernization of Nigeria's financial services sector.
The delegation was led by Interswitch Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Mitchell Elegbe, and Temenos Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa (MEA), Santhosh Rao. The engagement forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen partnerships with central banks across Africa in driving the next phase of digital banking infrastructure development.
The visit follows the strategic partnership announced by both companies in June 2026, under which Interswitch will deploy Temenos' banking technology solutions across Africa. The collaboration covers core banking, digital banking, payments, wealth management, and financial crime mitigation, with the aim of providing cloud-hosted and on-premises managed services to banks and financial institutions.
The partnership is expected to help financial institutions modernise their banking platforms while enabling them to deliver more customer-focused services. The rollout will initially target key African markets, including Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, and others.
During the meeting with the apex bank, discussions focused on how the collaboration would support Nigerian financial institutions in upgrading their core banking systems and accelerating digital transformation.
Both organisations also explored opportunities to collaborate with the CBN on emerging areas such as Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) innovation. Discussions included the use of resilient financial networks and decentralised application platforms to support the issuance, management, and adoption of digital currencies.
Speaking after the engagement, Mitchell Elegbe, Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer of Interswitch, said the partnership reflects a shared vision for the future of banking across the continent.
"Our partnership with Temenos and our continued engagement with the Central Bank of Nigeria reflect a shared commitment to building banking infrastructure that is resilient, inclusive, and ready for the next phase of Africa's financial evolution. We are proud to be part of the conversations shaping the future of digital banking technology and innovation across key African markets," he said.
The visit underscores the commitment of both Interswitch and Temenos to supporting regulators and financial institutions across Africa as they adapt to the rapidly evolving digital finance landscape, while reinforcing their long-standing collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
