Police Arrest 37-Year-Old Man Over Alleged N15.4m Gold Fraud
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Nasiru Amidu, over his alleged involvement in a gold fraud estimated at N15.4 million.
The suspect is currently under investigation for alleged obtaining by false pretence and stealing following a petition filed by Alhaji Nasiru Salisu, Managing Director of NASS Gold Ventures.
According to police sources, the complainant alleged that Amidu approached him on July 14 to purchase gold valued at N15,454,600, promising to transfer payment after taking delivery of the items.
However, after receiving the gold, the suspect allegedly became unreachable.
Police sources further disclosed that when Amidu was eventually traced, he reportedly requested another consignment of gold worth N6 million, assuring the complainant that he would settle the outstanding balance of about N9 million.
The suspect allegedly failed to fulfil the promise and is further accused of using a similar method to obtain gold from other unsuspecting dealers.
Following the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Fatai Tijani, directed that the case be transferred from the Sabo Police Division to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for a comprehensive investigation.
Investigators are working to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify other possible victims.
The investigation is being handled by the Swift Enquiry Team of the SCID under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Mr. Dayo Akinbisehin.
Police said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
