Tinubu Urges Muslim Women to Champion Faith, Resilience, National Development
ABUJA — First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Muslim women across the country to remain steadfast in faith, resilient in the face of challenges and committed to their responsibilities to their families, communities and the nation.
The First Lady made the call while declaring open the 41st National Conference of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) in Umuahia, Abia State.
The conference is themed, “Faith, Resilience and Responsibility: Muslim Women Responding to Challenges.”
Represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, Senator Tinubu described the theme as timely and a call to action, stressing that faith provides women with strength and keeps hope alive during difficult times.
She commended FOMWAN for more than four decades of service to women and families across Nigeria, urging its members to sustain their contributions to building peaceful families, stronger communities and a better nation.
According to her, Muslim women have important roles to play as mothers, wives, educators, mentors and community leaders.
“As women, our faith strengthens us, gives us courage and keeps hope alive, even in the face of challenges. Through faith, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility, we can continue to make meaningful contributions to our families, communities and our nation,” she said.
Tinubu also urged the women to lead by example through love, compassion, patience and mutual support, while ensuring that sound moral, ethical and religious values are instilled in children.
She encouraged participants to use the conference to exchange ideas, learn from one another, strengthen partnerships and develop practical responses to challenges affecting women, families and communities.
The First Lady expressed optimism that the resolutions from the conference would translate into concrete actions capable of improving the welfare of women and promoting peace, unity and national development.
Otti: Faith provides moral compass
In his remarks, Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, said faith provides a moral compass for navigating an increasingly changing world, while resilience gives people the courage to remain steadfast during difficult circumstances.
Represented by his wife, Mrs Priscilla Chidinma Otti, the governor said responsibility gives people purposeful direction and calls them to live meaningful lives within their families, communities and the nation.
He described the relationship among adherents of different religions in Abia as remarkable, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to religious tolerance, inclusion and peaceful coexistence.
“In Abia, we understand that religious diversity is not a weakness; it is part of the richness of our shared humanity. As such, the Abia State Government remains committed to religious tolerance, inclusion and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
FOMWAN highlights four decades of service
The National Amirah of FOMWAN, Dr Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza, said the association had, for more than four decades, remained a beacon of faith-inspired service.
She said FOMWAN had contributed to education, healthcare, women empowerment, humanitarian response, peacebuilding and community development across Nigeria.
According to her, the organisation’s journey reflects the commitment of generations of Muslim women who have dedicated themselves to serving Allah through service to humanity.
The 41st FOMWAN National Conference brought together Muslim women from across Nigeria to deliberate on issues affecting women, families and communities and explore practical strategies for strengthening their contributions to national development.
