Zumuratu-L-Mumin Islamic School Lekki Cancels Yearly Ramadan Home-to-Home Lecture, Targets Community Welfare Initiatives in Memory of Late Sheik Kegbegbe

In an unexpected development, Khalifat Ibrahim Taofeek Kegbegbe, the proprietor of Zumuratu-L-Mumin Arabic and Islamic School, Central Mosque Phase 2, Lekki, Eti-Osa, Lagos, announced the cancellation of the annual home-to-home Ramadan Lecture for 2024. 

The decision was revealed on Sunday, March 10, 2024, aims to respect the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, who host the lecture.

Kegbegbe, successor to the late Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kegbegbe, explained that the initiative recognizes the economic crisis in the country. He expressed the school's commitment to using the holy month of Ramadan to pray for students, past hosts, and the entire nation, hoping for relief from economic hardships.

The cancellation announcement was accompanied by a heartfelt gesture. Kegbegbe disclosed plans by the old students and well-wishers of Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kegbegbe to commemorate the 13th anniversary of his passing on the 20th day of Ramadan, falling on Saturday, March 30, 2024. They intend to feed the poor and provide domestic necessities to needy families.

The late Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kegbegbe, an influential Islamic scholar, initiated the yearly home-to-home Ramadan Lecture in Ilasan Jakande Housing Estate, Lekki, in 1990. This tradition was established after the residents of Maroko town were compelled to relocate by the military government. Thousands of students benefited from his teachings until his passing on February 15, 2011.

Ibrahim Taofeek Kegbegbe emphasized that Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kegbegbe's legacy includes giving to the less fortunate, aligning with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. Quoting the Prophet, he said, "Whoever went to bed satisfied while their neighbors were hungry is not a Muslim."

He added, “The charitable program on the 30th of March is going to be an interdenominational one where 100 people would be financially rewarded with religiously unbiased assistance.”

Mrs. Lateefat Surajudeen, a mother of a student at the school, welcomed the initiative, expressing concern that the young students who enjoyed participating in the home-to-home lecture would not be happy with the total cancellation of the yearly program.

“The charitable initiative is a good idea and we are going to work with Khalifat Ibrahim Kegbegbe to make it a reality”, Aishat Muhammad said.

Notable male students of the late Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kegbegbe include Sheikh Muyideen (Mufaseer Alagutan Central Mosque) Eti-Osa; Imam Jamiu Moridiu; Uztas Ismail Moridiu; Sheikh Khalifa Abdul-Rahaman Issa Tefutu; Uztas Adekunle Afolabi; Imam Sodik Naira; Uztas Abdul Rasak Jimoh; Uztas Zakariyah Issa Tefutu; Uztas Shakiru Ogunderu; Brother Mustapha Tunde Olatunji (United States of America); Brother Abdul Rahman Ogundimu Ogunleye (United Kingdom); Brother Buhari Ogunleye, and Uztas Sulaiman Kegbegbe.

Uztas Abdul Semiu Ibrahim (Ilala), and Brother Jimoh Ibrahim (Ilala) are also among the notable students.

Among the female students are Sister Ganiyat Ogunleye; Sister Abiodun Ashimi; Sister Waliat Ashimi; Sister Karimot Ogunleye; Khadijah Ogunleye; Zainab Ogunleye; Fatimah Jimoh; Awawu Jimoh, and Misturat Lawal.

The decision to forgo the traditional Ramadan Lecture reflects a shift towards impactful charitable initiatives, symbolizing the enduring legacy of Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kegbegbe. The school and its community now stand united in their commitment to fostering compassion and support for those in need during this sacred month.
