Adamawa/Taraba Customs Command Intercepts Smuggled Petroleum Products

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Garba Bature Bashir, addressed the media at the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Yola, highlighting the commendable efforts of the Adamawa/Taraba Area Command in combating smuggling activities.

Comptroller Bashir expressed satisfaction with the Command's recent achievements in curbing smuggling across the territorial borders. He attributed this success to the collaborative efforts, effective border management, intelligence sharing, and dedication of the operatives.

Over the past two weeks, the Command intercepted and seized five incidents involving Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) destined for Cameroon Republic. The seized PMS, along with the vehicles used for transportation, amounted to a Duty Paid Value of N10,871,496.25. Despite no suspects being apprehended during the operations, the Command remains resolute in enforcing customs regulations.

Bashir emphasized the detrimental effects of smuggling on national development, including hindering trade policies, revenue generation, food security, and public safety. Smuggling activities often intersect with illicit practices such as money laundering, terrorism financing, and human trafficking, posing significant threats to national security.

The Adamawa/Taraba Area Command reiterated its commitment to eradicating smuggling within its jurisdiction. Bashir warned smugglers of the Command's enhanced surveillance and urged them to cease illegal activities and embrace lawful trade practices.

The Command solicited support from border communities, patriotic citizens, transporters, oil marketers, and the media in combating smuggling. They encouraged the public to provide timely intelligence, remain vigilant, and raise awareness about the adverse effects of smuggling on society.

Comptroller Bashir acknowledged the support of the Nigeria Customs Service management, led by Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, in facilitating anti-smuggling operations. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering commitment to service advancement and recognized the collaborative efforts of various Customs units and security agencies.

The press conference concluded with appreciation for attendees and a call for continued cooperation in the fight against smuggling.
