Nigerian Customs Service Condemns Confrontation with VIO Officers

Abuja, 28 May 2024* – The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has issued a statement addressing a viral video depicting a confrontation between NCS officers and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) at the AYA Roundabout, Abuja VIO Office. The incident occurred on Friday, 24 May 2024, involving NCS personnel from the Customs Mechanical Unit in Karu Barracks, Abuja.

The NCS has expressed deep concern and empathy for those impacted by the incident and firmly dissociated itself from the actions of the involved officers. Describing their behavior as self-motivated and unacceptable, the NCS assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and appropriate disciplinary measures will be implemented to prevent future occurrences.

"This incident contradicts the values and operational standards of the NCS," the statement read. "Such behavior undermines the key policy thrusts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which emphasizes collaboration with sister security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their properties."

Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, the NCS reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and inter-agency cooperation.
