Seme Customs Area Command Reports 272% Revenue Increase, Highlights Anti-Smuggling Successes

In line with the Comptroller-General of Customs’ directive for enhanced transparency, the Seme Customs Area Command on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, unveiled an impressive revenue record for January to May 2024.

In a press release, Customs Area Controller, Seme Command, Comptroller Timi Bomodi, highlighted the significant achievements at the Seme-Krake Joint Border Post.

From January to May 26, 2024, the Command collected a total revenue of ₦2,634,190,645.53, surpassing the same period in 2023 by an impressive 272%.

The Command facilitated the export of 143,468 metric tonnes of produce with an FOB value of ₦35,199,971,097.70 ($38,461,397.39). The NESS value paid amounted to ₦174,518,464.82. A total of 406 SGDs were utilized for exports during this period.

On anti-smuggling efforts, Comptroller Bomodi reported 474 interceptions of contraband, including:

- 12,448 jerrycans of PMS (30 liters each), equivalent to 8 tanker loads.

- 6,467 bags of 50kg rice, equivalent to 10 trailer loads.

- 15 used vehicles.

- 1,251 parcels of cannabis sativa.

Additionally, the Command seized:

- 20 live parrots, 2 honey badgers, 2 pelican birds, and 404 live tortoises.

- 3,023 items of general merchandise.

- 149 packages of codeine.

- 45 used tires.

These seizures have a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦840,003,646.00.

Eighteen suspects were arrested in connection with these seizures. Eleven were granted administrative bail, three were handed over to the NDLEA, one to the Nigerian Police, and four remain in custody. A notorious smuggler was also apprehended and will face legal consequences.

To address concerns about the molestation of females at the border, the Command has established a complaint desk. Comptroller Bomodi emphasized strict actions against any officer found guilty of such misconduct.

The Command expressed gratitude to other government agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Navy, for their crucial support in maintaining border security.

Comptroller Bomodi concluded by commending their patriotic efforts and reaffirming the Command's commitment to safeguarding the nation's borders.
