Today, June 20, 2024, I celebrate the 67th birthday of a remarkable figure in Nigerian journalism and public service, Chief Bayo Onanuga. Born on this day in 1957 in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Onanuga has made significant contributions to the media landscape and political sphere of Nigeria.

Chief Bayo Onanuga's career is marked by a series of noteworthy achievements. He co-founded TheNews Magazine, a publication that has become a cornerstone of investigative journalism in Nigeria. His visionary leadership and commitment to press freedom have been instrumental in shaping the magazine's influential voice in Nigerian media.

In addition to his pioneering work with TheNews Magazine, Onanuga has held several key positions in the Nigerian media industry. From 2016 to 2017, he served as the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), where he played a crucial role in modernizing the agency and enhancing its news delivery capabilities. His tenure at NAN was characterized by a push for innovation and improved journalistic standards.

Onanuga's influence extends beyond journalism into the realm of public service and politics. He is currently the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy. In this role, he provides strategic counsel on communication and media-related matters, leveraging his extensive experience and deep understanding of the media landscape to support the administration's objectives.

Throughout his career, Onanuga has also been at the helm of PM News and TheNEWS magazine as CEO and Editor-in-Chief. His editorial acumen and leadership have ensured that these publications remain credible sources of news and information for Nigerians.

In 2015, Onanuga ventured into the political arena, contesting for a senatorial position in Ogun East District during the general elections. Although he did not win, his candidacy demonstrated his commitment to public service and his desire to effect change through legislative means.
