First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Urges Collective Efforts from Nigerians in Diaspora to Enhance National Development

Abuja, July 26, 2024 — At the 2024 National Diaspora Merit Award ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, called on Nigerians living abroad to actively contribute to the country's development. She emphasized the importance of leveraging their expertise, innovations, and experiences to improve Nigeria's human capacity and foster national growth.

Senator Tinubu, the event's Special Guest of Honour, highlighted the significant achievements of Nigerians in the Diaspora and urged them not to confine their successes to their host countries. She stated, "The government cannot do it alone. Our collective efforts across borders are necessary to drive innovation, share knowledge, and improve our human capital for shared prosperity."

She encouraged the awardees and the broader Nigerian diaspora community to continue making positive contributions globally and to remember their roots. "Your achievements are a source of pride for Nigeria. It is our joint responsibility to contribute to national progress through initiatives such as Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), charitable endeavors, and cultural preservation," Tinubu remarked.

Senator Tinubu praised the honorees for their dedication, hard work, and achievements in various fields, describing them as exemplary ambassadors of Nigeria. She called on them to continue representing the country's best attributes on the global stage.

Hon Abike Dabiri Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), also spoke at the event, reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to the welfare of Nigerians at home and abroad. She encouraged unity among the diaspora community, stating, "If you bring down Nigeria, you are bringing down yourself. Today is a testament of good luck and better things coming for the Diaspora."

The ceremony recognized 20 Nigerians in the Diaspora with awards in various categories, along with four individuals receiving Special Recognition Awards, including the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, a former member of the Nigerian diaspora.
