First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Partners with NPC, UNICEF to Boost Birth Registration

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), has partnered with the National Population Commission (NPC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to enhance birth registration across the country. This collaboration includes the launch of the UNICEF/RHI Commemorative Birth Certificate for 2024, aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian child receives proper documentation from birth.

The Chairman of the NPC, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced this development after leading a delegation of development partners to the First Lady’s office in Abuja. He revealed that a special commemorative event scheduled for August 29, 2024, will mark a significant milestone in the government’s effort to provide every Nigerian child with their first foundational identity.

“This event is global in scope, and though it originally took place on August 10, 2024, we are hosting this as a special commemorative event led by the First Lady. Our discussions with her were highly productive, and I believe we are on the brink of a major advancement in birth registration. This initiative will ensure that Nigerian children receive the recognition they deserve, granting them access to essential government services such as education and healthcare,” said Hon. Kwarra.

UNICEF’s Chief Child Protection Officer, Ibrahim Sesay, who was part of the delegation, emphasized the importance of this initiative in bridging the gaps in birth registration and supporting data-driven development for children across the country.

“We have been falling short in meeting our obligations regarding birth registration. However, with the Renewed Hope Initiative led by the First Lady, we now have a platform to accelerate the registration of every child born in Nigeria, beginning on August 29,” Sesay stated.

The official launch of the UNICEF/RHI Commemorative Birth Certificate for birth registration in Nigeria is set to take place on Thursday, August 29, 2024, in Abuja.
