First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Urges Parents to Prioritize Birth Registration, Unveils Commemorative Birth Certificate

Abuja, August 29, 2024 — The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has underscored the critical importance of birth registration as a foundation for national development and effective governance. Speaking at the official launch of the 2024 UNICEF/RHI Commemorative Birth Certificate at the State House in Abuja, she emphasized that a robust civil registration system is vital for achieving sustainable development in Nigeria.
Senator Tinubu highlighted that the renewed effort to register every live birth will significantly contribute to attaining Sustainable Development Goal 16, which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions. "A robust and efficient civil registration system is crucial for our development and governance," she stated. "It ensures that every live birth is recorded, forming the basis for policy, planning, and service delivery that meets the needs of all Nigerians. This is more than an administrative task; it provides the foundation for our social security."
The First Lady also pointed out the numerous benefits that come with prioritizing birth registration, including enabling the government to plan effectively for healthcare, education, and other essential services. She stressed that birth registration is vital for securing a child's legal identity and ensuring their rights are protected. "Without a birth certificate, children may be unable to access government services, prove their age, or fully enjoy their rights as Nigerians," she warned.
To support the government’s birth registration drive, Senator Tinubu announced the launch of the 2024 Commemorative Birth Certificate, issued by the National Population Commission. This special certificate, which features the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) logo, will be available for all births registered between August 29, 2024, and December 31, 2024.

UNICEF Country Representative, Ms. Christian Munduate, praised the Nigerian government's efforts in enhancing birth registration, particularly through the adoption of technological solutions. "Nigeria has made significant strides, and with the First Lady's support, I am confident we will achieve our targets," she said.
The Dein of Agbor, HRM Dr. Benjamin Keagborekuzi, along with other traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Emir of Shonga, Etsu Nupe, and the Tor Tiv, echoed the First Lady’s sentiments. They emphasized the importance of birth data for the nation’s social security and commended the role of women in driving progress.
The event also featured a symbolic electronic registration of children, and the wives of state governors were in attendance to pledge their support in promoting birth registration across the country.
