FRSC Corps Marshal Urges Road Safety, Condoles with Families of Ibadan Crash Victims

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep concern over the rising fatalities on Nigerian roads, urging drivers and road users to adopt safer driving practices and adhere strictly to traffic regulations. His appeal comes in the wake of two tragic accidents in Ibadan that resulted in multiple casualties.

In a press statement released by the FRSC Public Education Officer, CC Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal condemned the reckless driving behaviors that continue to plague major highways across the country. He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims involved in the recent crashes at Ajao, opposite Bovas fuel station on the Ojoo/Iwo road, and Malo on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.

The first crash occurred on 13 August 2024, at 09:20 AM in Ibadan, involving four vehicles: a White Mack Truck (AKM 548 ZY) that suffered brake failure and lost control, colliding with a White Nissan Bus (MUB 20 LG), a Red Nissan Micra (BDJ 520 YC), and a Blue Honda CRV (KRD 707 ER). The crash involved 35 people, including 14 male adults, 10 female adults, six female children, and five male children. Seventeen people sustained injuries, while 16 lost their lives.

Later that day, at 3:14 PM, another fatal crash occurred in Malo involving a White Mazda Bus (DDA 733 XA). The driver attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver, lost control, and crashed. The incident involved 16 people—12 male adults, three female adults, and one female child. Tragically, 12 people were killed, while the remaining four male adults were rescued with injuries.

The injured victims from the Ibadan crash were taken to Amudalat Hospital for medical care, while the deceased were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force in Ibadan. The bodies of the Malo crash victims were deposited at FOS Morgue in Ipara.

The FRSC has intensified efforts to hold reckless drivers accountable, including collaborating with the judiciary to ensure that drivers involved in fatal crashes not only face license withdrawal but also legal prosecution. The Corps Marshal has directed the immediate arrest and prosecution of the driver of the articulated vehicle involved in the Ibadan crash, who fled the scene.
