LASTMA Rescues Two Injured Pedestrians in Early Morning Accident on Lekki-Epe Expressway

Lagos, August 10, 2024– In a swift response this morning, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) rescued two pedestrians who were seriously injured in an accident on the Lekki-Epe Expressway near Mayfair Garden.

The accident, which occurred around 6:30 AM, involved a Toyota Camry (YAB 133 JY) and a commercial LT Bus (SMK 84 YB). According to Hon. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, the pedestrians sustained severe fractures to their legs and arms after being struck by the Camry as they attempted to cross the expressway with their luggage.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Toyota Camry was intoxicated and lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision with the pedestrians. The vehicle then continued at high speed before crashing into a commercial bus that was dropping passengers at a nearby bus stop.

The LASTMA monitoring team acted promptly, ensuring that the injured pedestrians were transported to Akodo General Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Toyota Camry, along with two other occupants, was arrested and handed over to the police at the Elemoro Police Station.

In addition to the rescue efforts, LASTMA personnel swiftly cleared the accident scene, removing the vehicles from the expressway to prevent further traffic disruptions.

Hon. Giwa extended his sympathies to the victims and underscored the importance of road safety. He urged all motorists, including commercial bus drivers, to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol to prevent such tragic incidents.
