Ogun State has made a significant leap in its economic development journey by joining the League of rice-producing states in Nigeria. This development comes with the flagging off of the harvest of 200 hectares of farmland at Magboro Rice Farm in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. Spearheaded by Governor Dapo Abiodun, this initiative is a key component of the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), supported by the World Bank. The project aims to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve livelihoods while also positioning Ogun State as a major player in Nigeria's agricultural sector.

The significance of this development cannot be overstated. Rice is a staple food in Nigeria, and the country has been working towards self-sufficiency in rice production to reduce import dependency. By establishing a 200-hectare rice farm, Ogun State is contributing to national food security. With an efficiency yield of 70%, this translates to about 20,000 bags of milled rice per cycle, generating approximately N1 billion in revenue for the farmers. This figure could rise to N3 billion annually if the farmers complete three cycles per year. This level of productivity not only ensures food sufficiency but also contributes significantly to the state’s economy.

The governor's vision extends beyond the current 200 hectares. He has already set plans in motion to scale up the project to 2,000 hectares, which could generate an estimated N30 billion in revenue. This expansion would further solidify Ogun State’s position as a major food producer in Nigeria, with the potential to supply rice to other parts of the country. This strategic move is a clear indication of the state's commitment to becoming a food basket for the nation.

The OGSTEP Agricultural Sector Intervention is a key enabler of this project, providing farmers with critical support such as advanced agricultural techniques, access to quality seeds, modern irrigation systems, and technical training. This comprehensive support package is offered to farmers at a 65% discount on the cost of each mechanization operation, making it accessible and sustainable for the beneficiaries. This approach not only enhances productivity but also ensures that the farmers are equipped with the skills and resources needed to maintain and expand their operations.

The impact of this project goes beyond rice production. It also addresses other agricultural needs, including animal husbandry, which is vital for the state's overall agricultural ecosystem. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo, emphasized that this project is in line with the state’s agricultural policy, which aims to ensure food sufficiency for the people. Economic Adviser and Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, praised the farmers for their determination and hard work, noting that this project is a crucial part of Ogun State’s broader agenda to produce food locally and feed its population. This approach not only reduces reliance on imported food but also boosts the local economy by keeping the wealth generated within the state.

Project Coordinator, Mrs. Mosun Owo-Odunsi highlighted the importance of producing high-quality rice that meets the needs of consumers. Finally, the goodwill message from the Olu of Magboro, Oba Modiu Alalade, underscores the local community's pride in being part of such a transformative project.
