Oyo/Osun Customs Seize Over 2,000 Wraps of Cannabis Sativa Concealed in Sawdust

In a significant victory against smuggling, the Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 2,280 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, weighing a total of 1,824 kilograms. The illegal substance, hidden within more than 200 sacks of sawdust, was seized along the Ilero axis of Oyo State on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday, August 24, 2024, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Customs Kayode Wey. Comptroller Oramalugo praised the vigilance and dedication of the officers involved, emphasizing that the operation underscores the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and safety.

“The seizure of these 2,280 wraps of Cannabis Sativa highlights the professionalism and intelligence of our officers. The smugglers’ attempt to disguise the illegal substance with over 200 sacks of sawdust was a calculated move to evade detection. However, our team’s meticulous inspections have once again prevented these harmful drugs from reaching our communities,” Oramalugo stated.

The interception was based on intelligence gathered by one of the Command’s anti-smuggling units. Upon identifying a six-tyre DAF truck carrying the contraband, customs officers conducted a thorough inspection, uncovering the Cannabis Sativa hidden beneath the sawdust.

Comptroller Oramalugo expressed concern about the impact of Cannabis Sativa on public health, particularly among the youth. He assured the public that the Command remains resolute in its mission to prevent the infiltration of such dangerous substances into society.

The seized Cannabis Sativa will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and disposal, according to the Customs Area Controller. He also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or smuggling to the nearest Customs office or law enforcement agency.
