Abuja, Nigeria - The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with various national and international organizations, continues to enhance access to quality education for Nigerian youths. The initiative, led by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, recently celebrated the unveiling of 200 beneficiaries of the AUDA-NEPAD/African School of Economics/RHI Scholarships.
The unveiling ceremony took place at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja. In her address, the First Lady emphasized the administration's commitment to prioritizing education, highlighting several key policies and programs under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's leadership aimed at making education more accessible. These initiatives include the zero-interest student loan scheme, bursary and scholarship awards, and various education infrastructure development projects.
"The administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has made significant strides in the education sector. Our efforts, including the zero-interest student loans, scholarships, and infrastructure projects, are all focused on ensuring that every Nigerian student has access to education," stated Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
She further highlighted the Renewed Hope Initiative's National Scholarship Programme (RHI-NASP), which last year awarded scholarships worth N1,000,000 per annum for four years, along with brand new laptops to students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The second tranche of payments for these beneficiaries is scheduled for September 2024.
The First Lady also reiterated her commitment to the education and empowerment of the Nigerian girl-child, who historically faces greater barriers to formal education compared to her male counterparts. This commitment has led to the establishment of Alternative High Schools for Girls across the country.
Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, praised the First Lady's dedication to the education sector, announcing an additional 4,000 bursary grants for tertiary education students in support of her efforts.
Princess Gloria Akobundu, CEO of AUDA-NEPAD in Nigeria, remarked on the quality education the scholarship beneficiaries will receive both within and outside Nigeria. Additionally, Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria Leena Pylvanainen expressed her country's eagerness to explore further educational partnerships with the Renewed Hope Initiative.
The 200 scholarship recipients will begin their academic careers at the African School of Economics, an affiliate of Princeton University, USA.
