DHQ Debunks Rumors of Acting Chief of Army Staff Appointment, Warns Against Calls for Military Coup
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims circulating in some media outlets about the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). In a statement released on October 21, 2024, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, clarified that no such appointment has been made. Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the current COAS, is on his annual leave and is in good health.
Contrary to the rumors, Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, is handling routine duties and providing updates to the COAS, as per standard military procedures. The DHQ reassured the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) remain professionally managed, with all service chiefs actively fulfilling their constitutional duties.
The DHQ also condemned individuals spreading unfounded claims, advising media organizations to verify their information before publishing. It further warned against the circulation of a viral video advocating for a military coup, stating that such actions are treasonable under Nigerian law.
The AFN reiterated its unwavering commitment to the country’s democracy and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, emphasizing that the military’s focus remains on safeguarding Nigeria's territorial integrity. Brigadier General Gusau also acknowledged the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the nation, attributing it to the strong support from the President and the AFN’s leadership.
Finally, the DHQ called on Nigerians to continue their prayers and support for the military, assuring the public that security agencies are taking necessary steps to address any threats to the nation’s democratic order.
