Dr. Ikubese Advocates for Universal Health Insurance, Citing Nigerians’ ‘Health Consciousness’ Amid Economic Challenges

Amidst Nigeria's economic struggles, Dr. Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, philanthropist and Chief Medical Director of Sckye Hospitals Limited, has emphasized the need for Nigerians to prioritize their health through universal health insurance. In an exclusive interview with the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), led by Comrade Oki O. Samson, Dr. Ikubese highlighted how financial challenges hinder many Nigerians from accessing quality healthcare, leading them to opt for cheaper alternatives like herbal remedies.

“Nigerians are health conscious, but they’re also pocket conscious,” Ikubese observed. “This pocket consciousness limits our ability to fund healthcare, making it seem as though we’re not health conscious. Health insurance is the way to go.” He commended the Ondo State government for its health insurance initiatives, which, under former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, have expanded to include informal sectors, giving artisans and market women access to affordable healthcare.

In addition to his advocacy, Dr. Ikubese has been involved in various humanitarian initiatives since 2004. One notable program provides free healthcare to mothers with triplets, covering antenatal care, medications, and even free Caesarean sections if needed. Beneficiaries also receive monthly support of N30,000 per child for one year, with extensions given to families facing financial hardship.

Dr. Ikubese shared how his model inspired Ondo State’s Mother and Child program, initiated by former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, although government policy limitations affected its long-term sustainability.

The doctor also acknowledged Queen Naomi Ogunwusi’s support for Sckye Hospital patients, particularly a mother who delivered her child while in prison. Dr. Ikubese has pledged lifelong free healthcare for the child and covers the child’s school tuition each year, a commitment he renewed two weeks ago.

Known for his discreet approach to philanthropy, Dr. Ikubese encourages others to give, inspired by his philosophy of abundance. “If you want more, learn to give,” he said, adding that excess wealth is meant to serve others. Although he occasionally shares his work on social media to inspire others, he maintains that the true purpose of his contributions is to uplift those in need.

Through his healthcare initiatives and continued support, Dr. Ikubese’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians serves as a powerful example of how universal health insurance could help alleviate healthcare burdens across the nation.
