First Lady Celebrates General Gowon at 90, Hails His Patriotism
Abuja, October 19, 2024 – Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, today celebrated the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as he marked his 90th birthday. Speaking at a special thanksgiving service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, the First Lady praised General Gowon's life of humility, simplicity, and dedication to the nation, describing his patriotism as a source of hope for the country’s future.

Senator Tinubu, who joined family, friends, and dignitaries—including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo—paid glowing tribute to General Gowon. Reflecting on his time as Nigeria’s leader, she highlighted his unwavering love for the country and his exemplary leadership qualities.
“I was just six years old when you became the Head of State,” Tinubu recounted. “Looking back, it’s clear that your life was destined by God to be an example of good in a world filled with cynicism. Your simplicity, humility, and patriotism give us hope that Nigeria can thrive if we all do our part.”

On behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the nation, the First Lady thanked General Gowon for his service, noting that his approach to leadership serves as a lesson for all Nigerians.
Quoting the Bible, she said, “Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. You have demonstrated this love through your actions and your leadership. We are deeply grateful.”

In response, General Gowon, who led Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, urged Nigerians to continue praying for the country and reiterated his famous commitment to national unity. “To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done,” he said. “We achieved this unity, even though it came at the cost of a civil war. But in the end, it was Nigeria that emerged victorious.”
The service, which featured prayers and music from various choirs, was a celebration of General Gowon’s enduring legacy and his dedication to a united Nigeria.
