SUNU Health Advocates for Affordable, High-Quality Healthcare
SUNU Health Nigeria Limited, a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO), has called for the delivery of high-quality healthcare services at cost-effective rates. Dr. Patrick Korie, Managing Director of SUNU Health, made this appeal on Thursday at the Providers Enrollee Forum webinar, themed “Medical Ethics and the Delivery of Quality Care.”

During the webinar, Dr. Korie emphasized that the event serves as a routine platform for the HMO and key stakeholders to discuss best practices and strategies for delivering effective, affordable healthcare. "Our goal is to provide healthcare that maintains high standards while remaining cost-effective," Korie stated, noting that quality and affordability are especially important given current economic challenges.

Dr. Korie also highlighted the importance of medical ethics in healthcare delivery, stressing that ethics play a critical role not only for medical practitioners but also for patients. "It is essential to consider ethics from both the provider’s and the patient’s perspectives," he added, underlining that ethical considerations directly impact the quality of care.

Guest speaker Rev. Fr. Udochukwu Ugorji addressed the growing legal awareness among patients and emphasized the importance of medical practitioners understanding their professional responsibilities and ethical obligations. "Today’s patients are increasingly aware of their rights, which makes practitioners more liable to litigation," Ugorji explained. He advised healthcare providers to be knowledgeable not only in their medical specialties but also in legal and ethical standards to avoid potential legal complications.

Ugorji recommended several measures to promote ethical standards within healthcare institutions, including the establishment of Hospital Ethics Committees, Ethics Rounds, and Patients Ethics Education. He also advocated for the implementation of a Patients and Physicians Bill and Grand Medical Ethics Consult to support the creation of healthy ethical practices and ensure policy adherence within clinical settings.

This call to action by SUNU Health underscores the importance of balancing quality and affordability in healthcare, with an emphasis on ethical standards that support both providers and patients in achieving better healthcare outcomes.
