Three Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision Following Tanker Brake Failure in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – A tragic multi-vehicle accident claimed three lives on Sunday evening, following a brake failure by a fully loaded tanker carrying black oil. The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 pm at Second Rainbow, inward Mile 2, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

The tanker, which lost control due to the brake failure, crashed into two Volkswagen commercial buses and a Honda car with registration number KTU 223 GH. The collision resulted in the immediate death of three passengers, all of whom were traveling in one of the commercial buses.

Emergency responders, including officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Two of the deceased were handed over to security personnel from Festac Police Station, while one of the victims' families took custody of their loved one on-site.

Other agencies that responded to the incident included the Lagos State Fire Service and LASMBUS, who worked together to ensure the scene was secured and cleared for traffic resumption.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the victims' families and emphasized the need for strict adherence to road safety measures, particularly for tanker and heavy-duty vehicle operators.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life. It is crucial that drivers, especially those operating hazardous material tankers, adhere to speed limits and prioritize safety at all times. Recklessness on the road must be avoided to prevent such devastating incidents," Bakare-Oki stated.

The accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly for drivers handling heavy vehicles, to avoid further tragedies on Lagos roads.
