Zone 2 Command Holds Lecture on Femicide Tracking in Lagos, Urges Enhanced Data Systems and Advocacy

The Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force, led by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Adegoke M. Fayoade, recently held a lecture aimed at addressing and measuring gender-related killings of women and girls, known as femicide, in Lagos State. The lecture, attended by police personnel and other stakeholders, took place at the MD Abubakar Conference Hall, Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.

The event featured a presentation by the Force Pathologist, ACP Dr. Samuel Keshinro, titled “Measuring Gender-related Killing of Women and Girls (Femicide) in Lagos State: Recommendations for Data Systems Improvements, Advocacy, and Action.” Dr. Keshinro emphasized the importance of accurate data collection to assess the scope of femicide, following the framework of the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS), developed by the United Nations. The ICCS aims to standardize crime statistics globally, enabling improved analysis and comparability across countries.

Citing the Spotlight Initiative—a high-impact United Nations project focused on ending violence against women and girls—Dr. Keshinro noted that one in three women worldwide experience some form of violence, including sexual, physical, and psychological abuse. He highlighted that a significant portion of this violence, termed Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), is committed by current or former intimate partners. Femicide, the most severe manifestation of violence against women and girls (VAWG), refers to the intentional killing of a female victim based on gender-related motivations, as defined by the UN.

The lecture served as an awareness and training program to bridge the statistical gap in tracking femicide within the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant agencies. The goal is to build a more reliable data framework to inform policies and provide globally comparable data to support efforts in ending this form of gender-based violence.
