Revenue Collector Killed in Tragic Containerized Truck Accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
A tragic accident claimed the life of a revenue collector earlier today along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near New Garage, inbound Lagos. The lone containerized truck involved in the incident bore the registration number **FST 887 XD**.
The deceased was reportedly attempting to collect dues from the truck driver when he was struck while crossing the busy expressway. The impact resulted in his immediate death.
Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly arrived at the scene, managing traffic and ensuring the remains of the victim were respectfully handed over to officers from the Adigboluje Police Division. Authorities are working with the victim’s family to finalize formalities. The victim's wife, upon receiving news of the tragedy, rushed to the scene.
The truck driver fled immediately after the accident, abandoning the vehicle at the scene. LASTMA officials removed the containerized truck, which had caused significant traffic congestion, and turned it over to the police for a full investigation.
In response to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim's family and highlighted the urgent need for transport union leaders to educate their members on safer revenue collection practices, particularly in high-risk areas such as expressways.
“This incident underscores the critical importance of implementing safer methods of revenue collection on busy roads,” said Bakare-Oki. “We deeply sympathize with the bereaved family during this difficult time.”
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety and mitigating traffic disruptions across Lagos. The agency assured the public of ongoing collaboration with law enforcement to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrences.
