Obasa Denies Governorship Ambition, Commends Sanwo-Olu's 2025 Budget Presentation
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has refuted claims suggesting he is nursing a governorship ambition, emphasizing his focus on strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.
Speaking on Thursday after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the 2025 budget proposal to the House, Obasa described speculations about his alleged ambition as a narrative pushed by political detractors.
"My concern has always been about building our party. Mobilizing support for the APC is a personal task I take seriously, but this has been misconstrued as a selfish aspiration. While I have not seriously considered running for governor, I am neither too young nor inexperienced to do so," Obasa stated.
The Speaker also dismissed claims that he sought validation from prominent Lagos families for a potential candidacy, affirming that if he ever chooses to run, he would do so as a proud representative of Agege.
Sanwo-Olu Presents N3 Trillion Budget for 2025
Governor Sanwo-Olu, during the budget presentation, unveiled the proposed N3.005 trillion budget for 2025, themed the "Budget of Sustainability." The budget includes a recurrent expenditure of N1.239 trillion (41%) and a capital expenditure of N1.766 trillion (59%), to be financed through projected revenue of N2.597 trillion and a deficit of N408.9 billion.
The governor expressed confidence that the budget would drive sustainable development, attract investments, and improve the lives of Lagosians despite the prevailing economic challenges.
Reacting to the budget, Speaker Obasa assured the governor that the House would scrutinize the document thoroughly while working to safeguard the interests of Lagosians.
Assembly Passes Vote of Confidence on Speaker
In a show of solidarity, the lawmakers unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Speaker Obasa, commending his leadership and unity-driven approach. Obasa also used the occasion to reiterate the independence of the legislature while maintaining its collaborative relationship with the executive.
"We are committed to ensuring the interests of Lagosians are protected. This House will not delay the budget passage but will ensure a thorough review to uphold socio-economic and political equity for all," he added.
The Speaker called for unity among Lagosians and lawmakers as the state works toward achieving its long-term developmental goals.
