First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Commissions Alternative High School for Girls in Osogbo, Empowers 1,000 Women

Osogbo, Osun State – The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her commitment to uplifting the lives of vulnerable girls and women, emphasizing that their past does not define their future. She made this statement during the commissioning and formal handover of the Alternative High School for Girls in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday, December 13, 2024.

The school, established under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Access to Education for All Programme in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), aims to provide a second chance at formal education for girls who dropped out due to early pregnancy, abuse, domestic violence, or financial hardship.

Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu encouraged the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

“To the beneficiaries of this school, I want to say to you all: your past does not define you. This is another chance, another opportunity, and you must embrace it with determination and focus. Just believe in yourself and know there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

The First Lady underscored the critical importance of educating the girl child, describing it as a fundamental human right and a key to national development.

“Through this facility, we are not only giving these girls and women a second chance at formal education but also equipping them with life skills to rebuild their confidence, independence, and potential to contribute meaningfully to society. Investing in women and girls’ education is investing in the future of our nation.”

The facility includes modern classrooms, a crèche, and a skills acquisition center designed to provide holistic support for the beneficiaries.

Commendation and Collaboration

Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, lauded the efforts of the First Lady, stating that the Renewed Hope Initiative is living up to its mission of improving the lives of families.

“Osun State has benefited immensely from this initiative, and we are grateful for the establishment of this school, which will be managed by the state government moving forward,” Governor Adeleke said.

The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmed, emphasized the alignment of the project with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

Women Empowerment

As part of the event, 1,000 women in Osun State received economic empowerment packages, including business recapitalization grants of ₦50,000 each and essential items. The First Lady urged the beneficiaries to use the support judiciously to improve their livelihoods and those of their families.

The commissioning of the Alternative High School for Girls and the empowerment programme highlight the First Lady’s dedication to advancing education, fostering economic independence, and enhancing the welfare of ordinary Nigerians—a vision shared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
