LASTMA Intensifies Night Traffic Control Ahead of New Year Festivities

....Clears Multiple Collisions at Ikoyi and Lekki-Ajah During Night Surveillance

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has ramped up its night-time traffic control and monitoring operations across major commercial areas, including Lekki-Ajah, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and other high-traffic zones in preparation for the New Year celebrations.

This proactive measure aims to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the holiday season and address the anticipated increase in traffic in Lagos’ bustling districts.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, led the nocturnal operations and reiterated the agency’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring seamless traffic flow across the metropolis. He commended the vigilance and efficiency of LASTMA officers in preventing disruptions and ensuring smooth transit on key routes.

Mr. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to prioritize discipline and responsibility on the roads, emphasizing the need to comply with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. He noted that such cooperation is essential for the safety of all road users and the effectiveness of the city’s traffic infrastructure, especially during the festive season when vehicular traffic is expected to surge.

Timely Interventions

During the operations, LASTMA personnel successfully cleared five multiple-vehicle collisions in the Ikoyi and Lekki-Ajah axis, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow.

In another incident, LASTMA officers operating near the Gbagada Bridge, ascending from Iyana-Oworonsoki, rescued a young woman involved in a severe solo accident. The crash involved a Toyota Matrix with registration number JJJ 165 FG, carrying five occupants who were reportedly intoxicated. The driver lost control and collided with a culvert near the bridge.

The injured woman, who suffered a deep laceration to her left hand, received immediate medical attention after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Security operatives provided support during the rescue operation.

Commitment to Safety

Mr. Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s dedication to ensuring Lagos roads remain safe and orderly. He assured residents and visitors of the agency's readiness to manage traffic effectively, ensuring a smooth travel experience during the festive period.

The operations underscore LASTMA’s resolve to maintain Lagos’ dynamic streets as safe and navigable hubs for residents and visitors alike during the New Year celebrations.
