Nigeria Customs Service Revamps 2025 Enforcement Strategy, Dissolves Joint Border Patrol Team
In a bold move to enhance border management and trade facilitation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled its 2025 Enforcement Strategy. This initiative aims to address bottlenecks in trade, bolster border security, combat smuggling, and promote legitimate trade across the country.
The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has approved significant measures to streamline operations, including the reduction of customs checkpoints nationwide. Instead of relying on multiple checkpoints, the Service will now prioritize intelligence-driven operations and advanced risk management frameworks to boost efficiency and effectiveness. Cutting-edge geospatial tools and other advanced technologies are also being deployed to modernize enforcement strategies, reflecting the NCS's commitment to innovation and precision in border security and anti-smuggling efforts.
In line with these reforms, the NCS has announced the dissolution of the Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT). The decision followed consultations with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The JBPT, initially launched in 2019 under the codename "Ex-Swift Response," was established to enforce Nigeria’s partial border closure policy. Over the years, it played a crucial role in curbing the influx of dangerous goods and ensuring compliance with trade and security regulations.
The NCS has expressed its gratitude to the partner agencies that contributed to the success of the JBPT, acknowledging their dedication and cooperation in safeguarding Nigeria's borders.
The Comptroller-General reassured the public and stakeholders that these changes will not compromise border security or trade facilitation. Instead, they signify a strategic shift towards a more modern, technology-driven approach to customs operations. The NCS remains steadfast in its commitment to securing the nation’s borders, enhancing trade compliance, and promoting national security.
The Service has also called on all stakeholders to support its efforts in combating economic sabotage, pledging to continue working diligently to protect Nigeria’s borders, facilitate legitimate trade, and ensure the well-being of all citizens.
