One Dead, Four Rescued in Fatal Ilubirin Accident on Third Mainland Bridge
A tragic accident involving a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC) claimed one life and left four others injured early Monday morning at Ilubirin, inward Sura, on the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), led by its General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, coordinated rescue operations immediately after the collision. With assistance from concerned bystanders, four victims were pulled from the wreckage. Three of the rescued individuals sustained injuries but survived, while one victim, trapped inside the J5 Ford bus carrying pepper and other perishable goods, succumbed to injuries on the spot.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the J5 Ford bus suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed, leading to the collision with the Mercedes truck.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force, and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), worked alongside LASTMA officials to manage the situation and provide care to the injured. The survivors were promptly transported to the Lagos Island General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
LASTMA’s rescue team also ensured the swift clearance of the accident scene, removing the wrecked vehicles and scattered goods to restore traffic flow on the busy bridge.
Mr. Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to prioritize road safety. He emphasized the importance of maintaining vehicles, particularly braking systems, to prevent avoidable accidents, especially during the festive season.
LASTMA reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety of all road users and pledged continued collaboration with relevant agencies to minimize road accidents across Lagos.
