Police Debunks Allegations Against IGP, Promises Prosecution of Erring Officers
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF described the allegations as baseless and a deliberate attempt to malign the reputation of the IGP and the Force. The statement clarified that the incident in question, which occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 26, 2023, has been thoroughly investigated, and the culpable officers are facing disciplinary actions.
The officers involved – DSP Peter Ejike, Inspector Ekende Edwin, Inspector Esther Okafor, and Sergeant Talabi Kayode – all attached to the Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, theft, and abuse of office.
Details of the Incident
According to the investigation, the officers unlawfully detained Mr. Andrew Ejah, an employee of FATFAD Cargo Nigeria Limited, who was transporting ₦74,950,000 on behalf of clients. They deliberately misrepresented the recovered amount as ₦31,790,000 and demanded a percentage of the funds to suppress the case.
The affected officers further attempted to cover their misconduct by concealing evidence, including photographs taken during the arrest. Forensic analysis revealed that the officers conspired to steal ₦43,160,000 from the total amount and hide it outside Abuja.
Following disciplinary proceedings, the officers were suspended and are set to face prosecution for their actions, which include tampering with exhibits, corrupt practices, and unprofessional conduct.
IGP Monitoring Unit Steps In
The Force Headquarters, through the IGP Monitoring Unit, intervened after receiving a petition from the owners of the money. The unit recovered ₦31,790,000 and initiated investigations that exposed the officers' criminal activities.
“The movement of such an amount of money by the alleged cargo company could have been investigated and handled professionally by the police. However, these officers were carried away by greed and acted criminally,” the statement read.
Call for Public Trust
The NPF urged the public and media to disregard the false narrative circulating in some quarters, emphasizing that it was a distraction orchestrated by mischief-makers to tarnish the IGP’s reputation.
“The circulating false narrative undermines public trust and detracts from ongoing efforts to reform the Police Force by eradicating unprofessional elements,” ACP Adejobi said.
The Force reiterated its commitment to upholding transparency and professionalism while ensuring that officers who engage in misconduct face the full weight of the law.
Next Steps
The suspended officers will be prosecuted following the conclusion of legal and administrative procedures. The NPF reaffirmed its determination to maintain the integrity of the Force and rebuild public confidence in its operations.
