At a time when grassroots politics demanded personal sacrifice and a commitment to breaking societal barriers, a young and dynamic woman emerged as a trailblazer in Alimosho Local Government. Hon. Bolatito Oladega Balogun, the first female councillor of Alimosho, paved the way for women in politics, leaving a legacy of impactful governance and community development. At 78, she reflects on her remarkable journey in an exclusive interview with GlobalReport Magazine.

A Trailblazer in Politics

Hon. Bolatito Oladega Balogun, a native of Akinogun in Alimosho Local Government, entered politics at a time when women were often excluded from leadership roles. Inspired by her political mentor, Chief Shafari Adaranijo, the first commissioner of the Lagos State Civil Service Commission, she ventured into the male-dominated political space with a determination to prove her worth.

"I saw the need to represent my people during a time when politics demanded personal sacrifice," she said. "Many doubted a woman could lead effectively, but I worked hard to prove them wrong. My achievements still stand today as a testament to that commitment."

Achievements as a Councillor

During her tenure as a councillor (1980-1983), Hon. Balogun implemented numerous development projects that transformed Alimosho and its environs. Among her notable achievements:

• Education Development: She facilitated the establishment of Alimosho Primary School, Oki Primary School, and Alaguntan Primary School. She also initiated Alimosho Grammar School and State High School, providing educational opportunities for countless children in the community.
• Infrastructure and Safety: Concerned about frequent road accidents involving schoolchildren, she lobbied for the construction of the Iyana-Ipaja Bridge, which remains a vital infrastructure today.
• Market Development: As the Coordinator General of Alimosho Market Women Association, she played a pivotal role in establishing and revamping markets, including Iyana-Ipaja Market, Pako Market, and Oladega Market, among others.
• Library Establishment: Hon. Balogun facilitated the construction of the largest library in Alimosho Local Government, which continues to serve as a hub for education and learning.

Relationship with Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji

Hon. Balogun’s exceptional leadership caught the attention of Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, the late Iyaloja General of Nigeria and mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Mama Mogaji recognized my dedication and invited me to assist with markets that were previously underperforming. Our collaboration flourished, and she treated me like her own daughter,” she recalled.

Hon. Balogun’s efforts led to the successful establishment of 36 markets under Alimosho Local Government, in addition to the 13 already existing markets. This earned her the honorary title of the first Iyaloja General of Alimosho in 1987.

Community and Political Roles

Beyond her tenure as a councillor, Hon. Balogun held various leadership positions, including:

• Member of the National Women Council of Nigeria
• Ex-Officio Member, Ikeja Community Development Association
• Volunteer Health Worker, Alimosho Local Government
• Vice President, Alimosho Local Government

Her outstanding contributions earned her several chieftaincy titles, including the Iyalaje of Idimu and Fiwajoye of Ibereko, Badagry.

Advice to Young Politicians

As a veteran in grassroots politics, Hon. Balogun advises young politicians to focus on serving their communities. “Leadership is about making an impact. Engage in projects that outlive your time in office and avoid greed. Remember, political opportunities are turn by turn—patience is key,” she said.

A Call for Recognition

Hon. Balogun urged the government to honor past leaders while they are still alive. “It’s better to celebrate leaders when they can appreciate it, rather than posthumously. I would be glad to offer my counsel to promote economic and political development in Alimosho and beyond,” she said.
