FRSC Enforces Penalty Point System to Curb Traffic Violations
According to a statement released to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, emphasized that the system will track and penalize erring drivers to promote compliance with traffic laws and minimize road crashes.
The penalty points system assigns specific points to various traffic offences, accumulating over time. Drivers who accumulate between 10-14 points will receive a warning notification, urging them to desist from further violations. Those reaching 15-20 points will face a temporary suspension of their driver’s license, while offenders accumulating 21 points will have their license completely withdrawn, barring them from driving on Nigerian roads.
Traffic Offences and Penalty Points
- Driving without a valid driver’s license – 10 penalty points, ₦10,000 fine
- Speed limit violation – 5 penalty points, ₦5,000 fine
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – 5 penalty points, ₦5,000 fine
- Dangerous driving – 10 penalty points, ₦50,000 fine
The FRSC also noted that traffic violation records would be documented and could be referenced by foreign authorities when Nigerian drivers seek driving privileges abroad.
Reiterating the importance of the initiative, the Corps Marshal stressed that the penalty points system will enhance discipline among motorists, deter reckless driving, and ultimately contribute to safer roads in Nigeria. He urged all road users to abide by traffic regulations, as the FRSC remains committed to ensuring strict enforcement of road safety laws.
