LASTMA Refutes Claims of High-Speed Chase Leading to Student Fatalities
Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has strongly denied allegations that its officials were involved in a high-speed chase that resulted in the tragic deaths of two students. The agency issued a rejoinder refuting a report published by Objectv Media, titled "Two Students Knocked Down as LASTMA Officials Chase Vehicle on BRT Lane."
According to a statement released by Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA's Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, the report presents a misleading and sensationalized version of events. The agency maintains that it does not engage in high-speed pursuits on any roadways, including the BRT lanes, as it has adopted advanced Traffic Management Solutions (TMS) technology for remote monitoring and enforcement of traffic violations.
Preliminary findings indicate that the incident occurred when the driver of a black Toyota Camry, illegally driving on the BRT lane, noticed LASTMA officers managing traffic ahead. In a desperate attempt to evade detection, the driver accelerated recklessly, lost control, and tragically struck two students of Government College, Agege, as they were returning home from school.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and reiterate our unwavering commitment to ensuring road safety through lawful and technologically advanced traffic management strategies,” the statement read.
LASTMA also urged media outlets to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying facts before publishing reports that could mislead the public and damage the reputation of government institutions. The agency reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining order on Lagos roads while safeguarding the well-being of all road users.
