LAWMA Hosts 4th Annual Ramadan Lecture, Emphasizes Cleanliness as a Religious Duty
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)has successfully held its 4th annual Ramadan lecture at its headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, focusing on the importance of cleanliness from an Islamic perspective.
Themed “The Impact of Waste Management in the Environment: The Islamic Perspective,” the event featured a keynote address by Dr. Abdul Lateef Abdul Hakeem, who highlighted the deep connection between Islam and environmental responsibility.
In his welcome address, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described Ramadan as a period of immense blessings and spirituality, stressing the significance of cleanliness in Islam.
“The Almighty God is the Lord of cleanliness. No wonder Muslims perform ablution regularly, affirming their commitment to purity before worship. As we observe this sacred period, I urge everyone not to revert to unhygienic habits that negatively impact the environment after Ramadan,”Gbadegesin said.
He commended the guest lecturer for his insightful discourse and praised LAWMA staff for their dedication to maintaining a clean Lagos.
Islamic Teachings on Cleanliness and Waste Management
Delivering his lecture, Dr. Abdul Hakeem emphasized that cleanliness in Islam goes beyond physical tidiness to include purity of the heart, attitude, and surroundings.
“Cleanliness is all-encompassing. Almighty Allah commands us to have clean hearts, free of malice, and to maintain physical cleanliness in all aspects of life. Wastefulness is discouraged in Islam, and LAWMA’s mandate aligns with this spiritual obligation,”he noted, citing Quran 2:222 and Quran 27:59-65 as references.
He further called on attendees to support the state’s waste management efforts by paying their waste bills promptly and ensuring that their communities remain clean. Quoting Prophet Muhammad (SAW), he reminded Muslims that picking up harmful objects from the road is an act of faith and that unsanitary practices such as urinating in stagnant water or littering are prohibited.
“The Prophet also warned against entering towns experiencing epidemics, understanding that cleanliness plays a crucial role in disease prevention,” he added.
Leaders Urge Continued Environmental Responsibility
In a goodwill message, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, represented by the Olorogun Agbeje of Lagos, Chief Waidi Olalekan Yussuf, applauded LAWMA’s efforts and urged Muslims to uphold cleanliness beyond Ramadan.
Similarly, Alhaja Kafilat Araoye, Managing Director of Lotus Bank, represented by Mr. Abdul Rasheed Ajao, encouraged the faithful to integrate Ramadan’s teachings into their daily lives.
Prayers were offered for President **Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCON), Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, LAWMA’s leadership, and the nation at large.
