AC Abdullahi Maiwada Clinches PhD with Near-Flawless Thesis on Nigeria Customs Internal Communication

Abuja, April 16, 2025 – Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, has successfully defended his doctoral thesis, earning a PhD in Media Arts from the University of Abuja. His groundbreaking research titled “Assessment of Internal Communication and Employee Relations Management in the Nigeria Customs Service” marks a major academic and professional milestone in his distinguished career.

The defense, held on April 16, 2025, was not only successful but also earned high praise from the external examiner, Prof. Irene Agunloye, who remarked that the thesis was “almost flawless”—a rare occurrence in her 35-year academic career.

From Public Service to Academic Excellence

Maiwada’s academic journey reflects a deep dedication to lifelong learning. After earning both his first and second degrees in a different field from Bayero University Kano, he transitioned into Mass Communication, obtaining a BSc (Hons), MSc, and now a PhD—all while managing the demanding role of Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service.

He expressed profound gratitude for Allah’s guidance, stating:
"This milestone is, first and foremost, due to the will and mercy of Allah (SWT). I am deeply humbled and grateful."

Maiwada dedicated his thesis to the memory of his late father and acknowledged the unwavering support of his mother, wife Aisha Musa Auyo (PhD in view), and close colleagues including Dr. Sadiq Mukhtar and Dr. Eric Andover.

He also lauded Dr. Roseline Yacim, Head of the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Abuja, and his supervisor Prof. Barth Oshionebo for their vital academic support. Importantly, he thanked the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for providing an enabling environment that supported his academic advancement.

An Inspirational Moment

Adding a touching highlight to the ceremony was the graduation of an 85-year-old PhD candidate—a lecturer from Baze University—who completed his doctoral studies alongside Maiwada. The moment, he noted, was a powerful testament to the idea that it is never too late to learn or too early to aim high.

"Today, I feel fulfilled and encouraged to keep pushing boundaries—not just for myself, but to inspire others within and beyond the service," Maiwada shared.
