Cyclist Dies in Collision With Truck in Ikeja, LASTMA Urges Road Safety Compliance
A cyclist lost his life today in a tragic collision with a moving truck at Alausa Bus Stop, near the 'Radio' area on Kudirat Abiola Way, along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the cyclist was attempting to merge from Kudirat Abiola Way toward Obafemi Awolowo Way when he collided with a heavily loaded truck (registration number BDG 610 YA). The impact caused the cyclist to lose control and strike his head forcefully against the pavement, leading to his immediate death.
Eyewitness reports indicated that the cyclist was using an earpiece and engaged in a phone conversation at the time of the accident, resulting in a critical lapse of attention on the busy expressway.
LASTMA operatives swiftly arrived at the scene to secure the area, manage traffic, and ensure the safety of other road users. Officers from the Alausa Police Division also responded and later conveyed the body to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, while emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to road safety protocols. He particularly urged cyclists to always wear protective gear, avoid distractions, and respect traffic regulations.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time. We urge all cyclists to prioritize safety by staying fully alert and properly equipped whenever they are on the road,” Mr. Bakare-Oki said.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to creating safer roads across Lagos State.
