Female Driver Critically Injured as Toyota Camry Plunges Off Otedola Bridge
A serious traffic accident occurred earlier today on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos, as a Toyota Camry with registration number KJA 126 BH plunged from the upper deck to the lower section of the bridge, leaving the female driver critically injured.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was speeding when she suddenly applied the brakes after spotting another vehicle entering the service lane ahead of her. The abrupt stop caused the vehicle to lose control and fall off the bridge.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA officials, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), swiftly arrived at the scene. The injured motorist was rescued and immediately transported to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for urgent medical treatment.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the critical importance of obeying speed limits and highway safety regulations. He attributed many road traffic accidents in Lagos to reckless driving and the disregard for established traffic rules.
“This unfortunate incident could have been avoided if the driver had adhered to the prescribed speed regulations. We urge all road users to drive responsibly and comply with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 for the safety of all,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He extended his wishes for the driver's swift recovery and reaffirmed LASTMA's commitment to maintaining road safety and traffic order across the state.
LASTMA is encouraging the public to report traffic violations, emergencies, or road incidents via its toll-free hotline: 0800-005-27862 (0800-00-LASTMA).
